　　直接切入主题。今天节选一篇新闻稿中的几句话，和大家分享一些雅思写作考试中可以被使用的词汇。本文“Spread of virus slows down nationwide”选自China Daily; By Wang Xiaoyu; Updated: Feb 17, 2020. 由于文中会涉及一些关于疫情的信息以及具体数据，所以请大家注意本文的发表时间。

1.  Rate of severely ill patients drops across country, commission spokesman say.

　　先来说说rate这个词，相信大家对于这个词绝对不陌生。但是非常值得一提的是，越是这种常见词汇，其实它的用法越是丰富到大家难以想象。我们今天只以雅思写作为背景，和大家分享几个它的用法。

本句中的rate是重症率，也是它较为常见的词义：比率，率。雅思写作中能用到的相关短语搭配有，a high/low/rising/increasing rate of unemployment， crime rate, divorce rate, 这些在大作文写作中都时常出现。

第二个常见的意思：速度，进度。例如：The number of violent crimes (juvenile crime) is growing at an alarming rate. 此句中的at an alarming rate通常被翻译成为“以惊人的速度”。

其实rate还有一个意思，在口语中常出现，但是在写作中不太容易被涉及。这个词条就是：价格，费用。例如，a fixed-rate mortgage，定额按揭贷款。或者留学生活中大家都会比较关心的exchange rate汇率。

2.  Increasing signs of a stable slowdown in the spread of novel coronavirus pneumonia in China appeared over the weekend, as health authorities pledged to maintain their assertive measures in Hubei province to avert the virus flaring up again at its epicenter.

Slowdown这个词怎么看怎么像形容词，但是它几乎只有名词词性。大家都比较熟悉的economic growth的反义词就是economic slowdown，可以翻译成“经济减速”，“经济放缓”等。

此外assert一词，作为动词大部分烤鸭都比较熟悉。在表述一些人的立场时，我们经常用到some people assert that 等句式，译为“声称，宣称”等。它的形容词assertive 通常指的是坚定自信的，那么衍生出来的assertiveness就是坚定自信的名词形式了。例如：Women are becoming growingly assertive in the workplace. 在一些涉及女性就业等话题中，这句话出现的概率很高。Assert其实还有名词词性，assertion，指的是断言，主张的意思。在写作时，可以替换opinion, view, viewpoint, standpoint等词。

　　    3. Outside Hubei, the number of new infections nationwide had dropped for 12 consecutive days as of Saturday. In Hubei, new cases had declined for three days in a row, and the number of suspected cases awaiting diagnosis is also shrinking, according to figures released by the National Health Commission.

这段话中出现了三次下降，写法都有不同，堪称小作文动态图写作的典范。前两个下降“drop”“decline”相信大家都很熟悉。第三个shrink可能大家不太熟知。Shrink一词译为“缩小”。通常用法就是the number of … shrinks。某些数据缩小，其实意思就是数据下降。这个词几乎很少及物，后面如果加宾语，通常用法是shrink away from someone/something， 或shrink from something译为“避开”某人某事。Shrink from the duty of …，通常被译为“避开某项责任”。当然了，美语中它也是名词，意思为“精神科医生”或“心理医生”。

Consecutive一词在小作文写作中也可以比较常用，译为“连续的”。例如： The figure of China had increased for 20 consecutive years. 在连续的20年中。

与之句意相差无几的是短语in a row，也是连续的。上面句子也可以写成：The figure of China had increased for 20 years in a row. 在这里大家要注意的是consecutive是形容词，而in a row毫无疑问是介词短语其基本词性为副词。

　　4. Meanwhile, the rate of severely ill patients has dropped significantly across the country, as in Wuhan, the provincial capital of Hubei, the proportion of patients in serious condition decreased to 21.6 percent on Sunday from a high of 32.4 percent on Jan 28, commission spokesman Mi Feng said on Sunday.

下降的写法再次出现，decreased to，下降到。首先to 后面肯定是跟具体数据，译为下降到某个具体数值。同时，更为重要的是，如果decreased to是本句的谓语，那么本句的时间状语通常都是一个时间点而不是时间段。因为下降到某一具体数值是一个相对的瞬间动作。上文例句就是如此。

上文出现的a high of 32.4%，译为最高点32.4%。这里high为名词，译为最高点，最大值。所以上文对应的句子翻译为：东莞的重症率从一月二十八日的最高点32.4%下降到本周日的21.6%。（周日应该指的是二月十六日）同时peak一词，也经常出现在小作文中表示峰值，并且具有名词和动词两个词性。
